Shukalata...which is Arabic for Chocolate, has long been an idea, awaiting it's time to be born. To see the resurgence of all the colours that Cavalier King Charles Spaniels used to come in. That time was in 2016 was that time, when our very first litter was born, sired by a friend and Colleague's imported Chocolate and tan male. This project has been a few years in the making and at times we thought it would never happen.
We saw our first pictures of other coloured Cavaliers in other Colours around eight or ten years ago in some of the old paintings, and have been on a quest since to see if there were any still around. We couldn't find any locally in Australia and realised we would have to source them from overseas, where a few breeders still had the colours. Our aim was, if possible, to introduce them to Australia. In speaking with many Australian owners of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, they all seemed to like the other colours - Whole Black, Black and White, Chocolate & Tan and Chocolate Tricolour.
These colours are not a new fad, they were relatively common prior to early 1970's when the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Controlling body who made decisions regarding what was acceptable and what wasn't, decided to only accept the four colours onto the register that you are used to seeing today, despite some protests from breeders of the other colours.
We ended up going to America to visit several breeders who still bred Chocolates. A lot of planning has gone into sourcing breeding dogs that not only carried the chocolate gene but also came from healthy lines. The last thing we wanted to do was add in a long forgotten colour without thinking of the Health Aspect.
Health is important to us. We want to do all the things that other breeders of Cavalier king Charles Spaniels do, to ensure the pups they produce are healthy. Our breeding females and males have or are in the process of being dna tested for Curly Coat/Dry Eye and Episodic Falling. They are also checked with Veterinary Specialists to make sure their hearts are sound and that they have no eye problems. The dogs are young now but in due course we will be doing MRI scans on our breeding stock as well, to make sure that we are following the recommended Breeding Protocols for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels in Australia.
Shukalata has had it's first two litters in 2016 - a huge milestone for us, and we hope to have some more in 2017. We don't expect to have any or many Chocolate pups first up, but as we go along there will be more.
All puppies will be desexed before leaving us as we do not want to be irresponsible and have the puppies ending up at Puppy Farms.
Inquiries regarding a Puppy can be made on the link under Puppy Nursery. (site still under construction) email us for more info.
